Service Public de Wallonie

The Service Public de Wallonie (Walloon Public Service) is the Walloon region administration, and brings its expertise to the Walloon government, helping it in its missions and implementing its policies. Based in Namur, it is divided into 6 Operational Directorates represented in all Walloon provinces. The Walloon Heritage Agency (AWaP), which covers archaeology, is under TLPE (Territory, Housing, Heritage, Energy), which notably has a branch in Wavre, head city of Brabant province. The AWaP branch in the Brabant regulates and oversees all archaeological works in the region. They have collaborated with Waterloo Uncovered since the charity's inception, and the project would not exist without them. They are active participants in the project, providing valuable links to the local community and Belgian stakeholders.

Museum of London Archaeology

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) is an experienced and innovative archaeology and built heritage practice who have been providing independent, professional heritage advice and services for over 40 years across the UK and internationally on schemes both large and small.

University College Roosevelt, Utrecht University

University College Roosevelt is the Liberal Arts and Sciences University College of Utrecht University. They provide undergraduate archaeology students to take part in our July excavations. During the dig, and upon their return to the university, these students conduct outreach work, for example in local schools to tell more people in the Netherlands about the project and the role of the Dutch troops in the battle. Students also conduct their own undergraduate research projects supported by Waterloo Uncovered and UCR.

In 1986, he was blinded and lost his hearing in one ear in an explosives accident, whilst serving as a Captain in the Royal Engineers. While recovering in hospital, Jamie was approached by St Dunstan’s (now Blind Veterans UK) and was offered a place on a rehabilitation course, which he describes as “the best thing that ever happened to him.” His rehabilitation with St Dunstan's inspired him to take on a series of "adventures" to begin rebuilding his life after his accident, including parachuting and running marathons in the desert and at the North Pole. For Jamie, Waterloo Uncovered is the latest in his series of adventures. He considers his discovery of Waterloo Uncovered through Blind Veterans UK to have been a “piece of good luck”, coming shortly after his retirement when he was faced with an overwhelming amount of free time to fill. While Jamie intended to take part in our excavation in Belgium in July 2020, this was unfortunately cancelled due to Coronavirus. Instead, Jamie took part in our Virtual Programme, and found that it was exactly what he needed to occupy himself in lockdown. He felt that the programme gave him something to look forward to each week during a difficult time, and provided him with some much needed routine and variety.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure="1_2,1_2" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="1_2" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" pac_dcm_carousel_specific_module_num="0" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_image src="https://www.waterloouncovered.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Jamie-Cuthbertson-Parachuting.jpg" alt="Jamie-Cuthbertson-Parachuting" title_text="Jamie-Cuthbertson-Parachuting" show_in_lightbox="on" align="center" _builder_version="4.27.4" _module_preset="default" max_width="480px" module_alignment="center" max_height="480px" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column ...

She now works for the Royal National Institute of Blind People as an Eye Clinic Liaison Officer at her local hospital. Maria deals with vision loss in her personal life in addition to her work, as she suffers from an almost complete loss of sight due to a genetic eye disease. When she first learnt about Waterloo Uncovered through the charity Blind Veterans UK, Maria saw it as the perfect opportunity to finally give archaeology a try, something she had always been interested in but had never been able to participate in. Unfortunately, due to coronavirus, Waterloo Uncovered’s 2020 excavations in Belgium had to be cancelled, and a Virtual Programme was delivered in their place. For Maria, this provided a welcome distraction during lockdown. 2019 Impact Report

2019 was one of Waterloo Uncovered's most successful years to date. Over the summer, 50 British and Dutch veterans and serving personnel took part in our excavation in Belgium, alongside a team of archaeologists led by Professor Tony Pollard, Director of the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology at the University of Glasgow. Here, the team uncovered more than 800 finds, including items of uniform from British Guardsmen, large numbers of musket and cannon balls from the fierce fighting, and grim evidence of the work of the surgeons in the Allied Field Hospital, in the form of amputated limbs from the struggle to save lives. Evaluation shows that 81% of personal goals set by participants were met "in full, or mostly". In addition, a scale to measure mental wellbeing, developed by the Universities of Warwick and Edinburgh, revealed an average improvement of nearly 30% in the short term, with an improvement of 20% sustained at the end of the nine-month programme.

2020 Impact Report

2020 was a difficult year for Waterloo Uncovered, as it was for people all around the world. Unfortunately, the global pandemic meant the cancellation of our annual excavation in Belgium. As a result, the team had to work hard and think creatively to adapt to the evolving situation, in order to continue providing much needed support to those who had served their country. As a result, the Virtual Programme was created: an online block of educational content and friendly discussions, embedded within a wider programme of welfare support. Read about our first Virtual Programme, the engaging online lecture series we launched over the summer, how we celebrated the 205th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and much more in our 2020 Impact Report.
