Impact Report 2021

2021 Impact Report

2021 saw Waterloo Uncovered build off the successes and innovations in virtual veteran support developed in 2020. This year, we ran a record four programmes, including brand new online courses exploring conflict archaeology and the Battle of Waterloo through the lens of Creative Arts and Finds. 2021 also saw our first Work Experience Programme participant successfully graduate from the programme, international press coverage, engaging in-person and virtual events and fundraisers, and much more. 2022 Impact Report

In 2022, we were finally able to return to the Battlefield with a new group of international veterans and serving military personnel, where we made some of our most exciting and poignant discoveries to date. In addition to our annual excavation, we ran six online support programmes, including our first supporting military spouses; hosted an incredible evening at the National Gallery; made international news; and much, much more! 2023 Impact Report

2023 has been another bumper year for Waterloo Uncovered. From adding landmarks back to the Waterloo map to supporting an international group of veterans and students, we’ve made our mark this year! This past year saw the delivery of four exciting veteran support programmes, targeting new groups of veterans in the Midlands and beyond, alongside a range of community fundraising activities and events. In the summer, we returned to where it all began for Waterloo Uncovered - Hougoumont Farm - to excavate two fascinating features that have changed our understanding of how the attack on the farm played out. James Hopkins

James Hopkins

James Hopkins became a trustee in 2021. James is an Armed Forces Veteran having served in the Army for 9 years, followed by 35 years in property development, management and investment, the last 23 years of which as Chief Executive Officer of Annington Limited, one of the UK’s largest residential investment companies. James has a long history of supporting Armed Forces and Veterans charities. He is a long term supporter of Waterloo Uncovered, having introduced the charity’s first corporate sponsor in 2019. James remains a non-executive director on several boards, is a founding Patron of the Tommy Club and is the Deputy Chair of the Hertfordshire Community Foundation. James brings strategic, organisational,leadership and personnel skills to the Board.

The programme features engaging online lectures and seminars on history and archaeology, allowing beneficiaries to explore conflicts from the Battle of Waterloo to the present day. No prior experience is needed, and all beneficiaries earn undergraduate academic credits through Utrecht University. Delivered over three months, the programme combines lectures and workshops taught by leading academics, with active wellbeing support. It fosters social connection, boosts confidence, and positions beneficiaries to find placements in museums and heritage organisations, or further develop their academic skills.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Project Review Volume 1

The first volume of our Project Review covers the four excavations we’ve run between 2015 and 2016. In magazine format, it reveals how veterans and archaeologists have been working side by side to unearth new information about the battle. Excavation Programme

Excavation Programme

Since 2015, Waterloo Uncovered has brought veterans and serving military personnel on archaeological excavations at the Waterloo battlefield in Belgium. Beneficiaries work alongside a team of archaeologists, historians, volunteers, and students in a supportive environment, whilst making remarkable discoveries that have radically changed our understanding of the battle. Beneficiaries of all abilities learn archaeological skills, from digging to metal detecting, whilst participating in meaningful activity. Prioritising mental health and wellbeing, it fosters connections between veterans and serving military personnel, both UK and international, archaeologists and students, with our experienced Wellbeing & Support team always available.
Finds Programme

Finds Programme

The Finds Programme brings our extensive Finds collection to veterans and serving military personnel across the UK. Beneficiaries are introduced to archaeology and its value in understanding the Battle of Waterloo. Through handling and interpreting objects at in-person workshops, beneficiaries contribute to key post-excavation processes and our understanding of the finds. The Finds Programme promotes wellbeing by fostering community connections via practical engagement with archaeology and heritage. At the end of the programme, beneficiaries showcase their work to friends, family and the public at a heritage location.
Virtual Programme

Virtual (2020-2022)

We delivered our first “virtual” programme in 2020 in response to the COVID pandemic, so we could continue to support beneficiaries at a time when many who felt the profound effects of loneliness and isolation. The programme focused on many aspects of the Battle of Waterloo, both the history and archaeology. Beneficiaries learnt archaeological skills and techniques, as well as joining virtual museum trips, including a behind the scenes preview of the collections at the British Museum with its curators. The programme encouraged beneficiaries to use mindful techniques and engage with archaeology with a strong emphasis on wellbeing.
The Creative Arts Programme

Creative Arts (2021-2022)

The Creative Arts Programme demonstrated the potential for therapeutic and educational activities to enhance the lives of beneficiaries.  Delivered in 2021, it reflected our commitment to developing stimulating, mindful and creative workshops that included art, writing and poetry.  The programme enabled beneficiaries to engage within a military community whilst exploring the historical context of the Battle of Waterloo, which may resonate with their own lived experience.  
Hidden Histories

Hidden Histories (2022)

Hidden Histories was an innovative virtual heritage programme, delivered by experts in history, educational wargaming and creative writing.  Programme beneficiaries were military spouses, extending our support to those who would normally be in a supportive role.  The team, led by archaeologist Sarah Danjal and historical novelist Katy Moran, hosted live panels featuring expert historians and virtual sessions exploring the lives of the Women of Waterloo and beyond.  Beneficiaries uncovered important stories that have often been ignored in the narratives of Waterloo, as well as capturing modern day experiences of the beneficiaries.
