The Face of War

On day seven of our 2022 excavation, we announced to the world our most important discovery to date. This year, we have discovered only the second complete skeleton ever uncovered on the Waterloo battlefield. Professor Tony Pollard, the project’s Archaeological Supervisor, said:

“The discoveries we are making at Mont-Saint-Jean have changed our understanding not just of Waterloo but of Napoleonic warfare and and its aftermath more generally.”

Find out more about the skeleton here.

Telling the World

Since announcing our discovery, we’ve had press coverage from all over the world! From the Oman Times to the New York Post to the BBC, we’ve been able to share our work far and wide and educate the public on our discoveries. We’re proud that the world now knows more about the Battle of Waterloo thanks to the hard work of our veterans, archaeologists, students and volunteers!

Grapeshot Discovery

Our archaeologists and metal detectorists have discovered plenty of musket balls over the last week of our excavation – but this week, metal detectorists Moos discovered not one but two pieces of grapeshot on the reverse slope where Wellington ordered his troops to lie down to protect themselves from enemy fire.

Check out our video for Day Seven of our 2022 Excavation, all about our most important discovery yet!

We wouldn’t be able to conduct our groundbreaking archaeological excavation at Waterloo, or deliver our life-changing veteran support, without the generosity of our supporters.
