James rejoined Waterloo Uncovered as a trustee in 2025, having previously dedicated several years in support of the charity. James was a soldier and has a keen interest in Waterloo history – creating a diorama of Waterloo – and Veteran and Serving Military Personnel wellbeing. He joined the Black Watch from Oxford in 1986, serving in Berlin, Northern Ireland, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Hong Kong. He helped plan the Kosovo operation in 1999, commanded in Iraq in 2004 and 2006, and planned the military security operation of the Olympics in 2012. He commanded Task Force Helmand in 2009/10 and was General Officer Commanding the 3rd Division between 2013-15. James is now the Chief Executive of Halo Trust, which helps countries recover after conflict, clearing landmines to save lives.
